After having breast cancer in 1985 mum made it her mission for the next 14 years to raise funds for Cancer Research and Cancer Support Group at Airedale Hospital where she received her treatments. There are so many newspaper cuttings showing the various events she organised, tombolla's, Dancing show in Skipton Hall when all Emma's Dancing school turned up to put on a show, Quiz's, Raffles - one for a flight on concorde. She would trudge up and down Skipton into every shop, every business to beg for prizes and support, from large companies like Silentnight (where we all had a spell working) to small one man businesses. Local people got used to her calling to ask for their support. She had a fabulous team of volunteers who helped her sell tickets, organise the events and without them it wouldn't have happened. At the same time mum was working full time, running her Village Shop in West Marton, doing bed and breakfast and then fund raising as well. Now you know where I get it from! Her energy was relentless - but when dad died she decided to finish with great sadness. Her well earned reward was an invitation to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party (which Mr Nelson the local estate owner put her forward for)- she saw Princess Diana, the Queen, Prince Phillip - running from row to row so she could get close to them all (Dad staying in the food tent) and had the most amazing day. Dressed in her best and big hat it was truly one of the highlights of her life. Thank you mum for all the many people you helped with the funds you raised and all the help you have always given to us all.
